MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Maurie Berman, founder of Chicago's iconic Superdawg, on May 17, 2015, at the age of eighty-nine; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

WHEREAS, a Chicago native ofthe North Park neighborhood and a graduate of Von Steuben High School, Maurie Berman returned from World Ward II and married his high school sweetheart Florence "Flaurie" in August of 1947; and

WHEREAS, the newlyweds wanted to open a small hot dog stand to operate in the summer months, and in order to stand out among their competitors, they created a unique and distinctive building with two giant hot dog statutes and a secret hot dog recipe. For the next 67 years, Maurie and his wife Flaurie nurtured and grew the iconic Superdawg Drive-In; and

WHEREAS, Flaurie Berman worked as the store's first carhop, and the business now supports approximately fifty employees. Many of the details of the store, original to the 1940's, have remained the same today, making Superdawg a nostalgic and unique destination; and

WHEREAS, Maurie is survived by his loving wife, best friend and business partner of 68 years, Flo "Flaurie" nee Miska. Cherished father of Scott (Terry), Myles "Mush", Lisa (Don) Drucker. He was the adoring grandfather of Alyssa "Lyssi" (Jordan), Laura (Ben), Max, Steffie and Ross, and great-grandfather of Talia, beloved brother of Rosa (Jerry) Burkman, cherished father-in-law of Pat Garcia (Julie Barton) and grandfather-figure to Livi Barton, and he was known as Uncle Maurie to many nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, Maurie Berman will be remembered not just as a gifted and savvy businessman, but also a respected community member, dedicated father and husband, and loyal friend to many. He will be deeply missed, but the memory of his integrity, generosity and kindness will live on in those knew and loved him...
