RESOLUTION

 

 

 

WHEREAS, the harmonious relations between people within communities in the city of Chicago is of the utmost importance for Chicago's residents; and

 

WHEREAS, our city has seen countless neighborhoods change, and as of late, the discussion of preservation of neighborhood identity has centered around rising rent and property values, as well as a change in neighborhood culture and demographics; and

 

WHEREAS, Chicago neighborhoods face rising tensions among communities with changing demographics, in the forms of vandalism, contentious community interactions, and in extreme cases, violence; and

 

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago to foster better intra-community communication and protect the basic civil and human rights of diverse populations across Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, while government and public policy has always played a role in the regulation of changing communities, it should also be used as an agent to facilitate communication and understanding between diverse residential groups by harnessing community input on solutions for mounting tensions; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, that the city council through its Committee on Human Relations shall conduct one or more hearings and shall invite community representatives and stakeholders of affected areas to provide policy ideas, community based solutions, educational programs, and other recommendations on the subject of improving community relations as it relates to changing neighborhood demographics. «
