Presented by    MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL            0N      APRIL 10, 2013

WHEREAS , On the afternoon of February 19, 2012, Chicago Police Officers Rodney G. Jones (Star #9243), Mark J. Pickert (Star #9832) and Jameka R. Sherrod (Star #18719) from Gang Enforcement Team 6721 were monitoring a "man with a gun" call at 6810 South Stony Island Avenue; and

WHEREAS, Upon arriving on the scene, the officers saw a man running east across South Stony Island Avenue. Police Officer Pickert immediately sent out a radio call with a description of the possible offender; and

WHEREAS, After seeing several more men running, the gang officers leapt from their vehicle and pursued them on foot; and

WHEREAS, As Police Officer Pickert chased one suspect. Police Officer Sherrod followed another, who was running with his hands in his sleeves. Officer Sherrod caught the man and she wrestled him to the ground. While attempting to handcuff the offender, she noticed the barrel of a handgun protruding from his sleeve. She alerted her fellow officers, who came to her assistance; and

WHEREAS, Officer Pickert began struggling with the offender, trying to disarm him. Seeing the man pointing his pistol directly at Officer Sherrod's face, Officer Pickert instantly pushed her head to the side, saving her life, just as the man managed to squeeze the trigger. At point-blank range, the bullet struck Officer Pickert in the hand and the concussion ruptured Officer Sherrod's eardrum; and

WHEREAS, Officer Jones then shouted at the offender to drop his weapon. When he refused, Officer Jones shot him. The offender still refused to drop his weapon. Fearing for his life and the lives of his fellow officers and any innocent bystanders, Officer Jones shot the man again, then kicked the .45 caliber semiautomatic Glock out of his hand; and

WHEREAS, The offender was subsequently charged with multiple counts of attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated battery of a peace officer with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and aggravated battery with a firearm; and

WHEREAS, Chicago Police Officers Sherrod, Pickert and Jones showed courage and composure in an exceptionally perilous situation. By taking a dangerous armed offender off the streets of Chicago, these officers exemplify the finest tradition of the Chicago Police Department; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this tenth day of April, 2013, do hereby honor Chicago Police Officers Rodney G. Jones, Mark J. Pickert and Jameka R. Sherrod for their display of bravery in the face of serious injury or worse; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to these members of the Chicago Police Department, and placed on permanent record in their personnel files, as a token of our gratitude and esteem.
