RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas J. Melas has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas J. Melas was a retired elected official and the loving husband of Irene, nee Prasopoulos; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas J. Melas was the much-adored father of Christina and Elizabeth, the grandfather of three and the greatgrandfather of one to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas J. Melas was the dear brother of the late Daniel and James; and
WHEREAS, A veteran of World War II, the Honorable Nicholas J. Melas served his country in the United States Army and was decorated with a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas J. Melas was elected in 1962 to the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago; and
WHEREAS, With a tenure that spanned thirty years, the Honorable Nicholas J. Melas was re-elected five times and served eighteen years as President of the Board; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his able service and the 100th Anniversary of the Water Reclamation District, the Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain was dedicated in 1989 on the north bank of the Chicago River at McClurg Court; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas J. Melas was also a member of the Illinois Pollution Control Board; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Nicholas J. Melas serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas J. Melas was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Nicholas J. Melas imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of April, 2013, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Nicholas J. Melas for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Nicholas J. Melas.
