RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, The Catholic Theological Union will hold its annual Blessed are the Peacemakers Trustee Dinner on April 17, 2013 lauding the Honorable Mary McAleese, the Eighth President of Ireland; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mary McAleese was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mary McAleese graduated in Law from Queen's University of Belfast and was called to the Northern Ireland Bar in 1974; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mary McAleese was appointed Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin in 1975; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mary McAleese was elected President of Ireland in 1997, succeeding the Honorable Mary Robinson, and was the first woman to follow another woman as an elected head of state; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mary McAleese is dedicated to advancing the ideals of justice, equality, social inclusion, anti-sectarianism and reconciliation; and
 
WHEREAS, A true leader who has worked to build bridges of understanding, the Honorable Mary McAleese played an active role on the world stage in helping to establish peace in Northern Ireland; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Mary McAleese's efforts exemplify the highest standards of negotiation and peace; and
 
WHEREAS, For her accomplishments and commitment to reconciliation, justice, and peacemaking, the Honorable Mary McAleese will receive the Blessed are the Peacemakers Award from the Catholic Theological Union; now therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of April, 2013, do hereby welcome the Honorable Mary McAleese to the City of Chicago and hereby commend her role as a peacemaker of our age; and
 
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Thursday, April 17, 2013, shall be officially recognized as the Honorable Mary McAleese Day throughout the City of Chicago; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official parchment copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Mary McAleese.
