RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Huffman was called to eternal life by the wisdom of God on the sixteenth of March, 2013 at the age of eighty; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Matthew J. O'Shea; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Huffman was the loving and devoted husband to the late Sallie R. Huffman; and
WHEREAS, As a man who valued family over all else, Dr. Huffman was greatly admired by his sons, Michael and Craig, cherished by his sister Sarah Baker, and adored by his four grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Troy, Alabama, Samuel was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He received his bachelors and masters degrees in education from Alabama State University in Montgomery, where he was an active member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and later received his doctorate in education; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Huffman began a long, distinguished career in education as a high school teacher in Union Springs and Montgomery, Alabama. After moving to Chicago in 1963, Samuel taught in the Chicago Public Schools, and later served as Vice President, and President of Malcolm X College. While there, Dr. Huffman increased enrollment and refocused the curriculum on employment based training; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated public servant, Samuel also worked for the Gary, Indiana Urban League and Chicago Model Cities Program. At both organizations, Dr. Huffman sought strategies for addressing poverty and other urban ills that threatened many major cities. Most recently, he served as President of Options for People, a public / private partnership that the longtime unemployed could be brought back into the labor force in a meaningful way; and
WHEREAS, His unending compassion for others endeared Dr. Samuel Huffman to his family, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dr. Samuel Huffman imparts a legacy ...
