Commemoration ofthe 85th Anniversary of the Grant Park Music Festival,
Carlos Kalmar's 20th Year as Principal Conductor, and Proclaiming June 12, 2019 "Grant Park Music Festival Day" in Chicago.
Whereas, the Grant Park Music Festival was conceived nine decades ago as a series of free, city-sponsored concerts to lift the spirits of residents during the Great Depression; and
Whereas, the Grant Park Music Festival is now one of the nation's finest and longest-running free, summer outdoor classical music series, bringing diverse audiences together to experience symphonic music in one of the world's most magnificent urban settings, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park; and
Whereas, the Grant Park Music Festival will celebrate its 85th season beginning June 12 and continuing through August 17 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and other beautiful venues in neighborhoods throughout the city - from South Shore to Rogers Park to Jefferson Park to Austin; and
Whereas, the Festival celebrates its historic 85th year and its 20th anniversary under the leadership of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Carlos Kalmar with a new long-term initiative, Festival Next, a series of concerts and programs aimed at reimagining the concert-going experience for the 21st century and nurturing a new generation of diverse musicians and audiences; and
Be It Resolved, that we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled this 12 day of June, 2019 A.D., do hereby commend the Grant Park Music Festival for its efforts to enrich, enlighten and uplift all of Chicago's residents and guests by presenting free, world-class classical music concerts; honors the Festival on the occasion of its 85th Anniversary; congratulates Carlos Kalmar on his 20 years of service to the Festival; and declares Wednesday, June 12, 2019 "Grant Park Music Festival Day" in Chicago; and
Be It Further Resolved, that an official copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Grant Park Music Festival.
