MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR INEZ ANDREWS
WHEREAS, On December 19, 2012, Almighty God, in His Infinite Wisdom and Judgment, has called to her eternal reward Inez Andrews, a talented gospel singer, wife, loving mother, and friend to all; and
WHEREAS, On April 14, 1929, Inez McConico Andrews was brought into this world in Birmingham, Alabama by Theodore and Pauline McConico. Inez found her passion for singing gospel through the Carter Choral Ensemble and was also a member of the Original Gospel Harmonettes. The group became very popular as one of the nations top Gospel Groups in the mid 1950s; and
WHEREAS, Inez Andrews got in contact with James Cleveland, "The King of Gospel Music", who recommended her to gospel great, Albertina Walker. As a result, Walker moved Inez and her family to this city where she started her career as part of the iconic Albertina Walker and the Caravans. Upon her arrival here, she united with the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church and later joined the Rev. Edmund Blair's Omega Baptist Church. Eventually, she spent three decades as a devoted member ofthe Redeeming Church of Christ. In the mid-1980s Inez Andrews united with the late Bishop Arthur M. Brazier and his congregation at the Apostolic Church of God; and
WHEREAS, In her teens, Inez Andrews married Robert Andrews and to this union two children were born. In 1959, she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Richard Gibbs in 1959 and this union was blessed with a son. She was married for a third time in 1970 to Wendell Edingburg and this union added four more children to her loving family; and
WHEREAS, After her second husband passed in 1962, she formed Inez Andrews and the Andrewettes and continued her success in gospel singing and was known nationally and worldwide as "High Priestess of Gospel." During her gospel journey, she toured Europe and sang for kings and queens and recorded numerous hit gospel songs including her signature version of the old spiritual "Mary Don't You Weep". She was a nominee for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences' Grammy and the Gospel Music Association's Dove awards, traveling and performing all around the United States in famous venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theatre, Madison Square Garden and the Kennedy Center as well as at the White House where she sang for three presidents. In addition to all this, she took the time to mentor aspiring young artists; and
WHEREAS, Inez Andrews leaves behind to cherish her memories her seven children: Legretta Andrews-Moultry, Gail Andrews-Perkins, Suzanne Edinburg, Richard Gibbs, Jr., Wendell Edinburg, Jr., Mark Edinburg, and Casey Edinburg as well as nineteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this 17th Day of January, 2013 AD, do hereby express our sincerest sorrow upon learning of the passing of the extraordinary and gifted "High Priestess of Gospel" Inez Andrews and extend to our deepest sympathy to her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched with her remarkable spirit.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy ofthis resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Inez Andrews.
