Honoring Mount Carmel High School on Winning the IHSA Baseball

Class 4A State Championship

WHEREAS, Mount Carmel High School was established by the Carmelites in the fall of1900, then called St Cyril College at 54"' and Jefferson Avenue;

WHEREAS, When it was first established St. Cyril College had 13 students and five priest teachers;

WHEREAS, In November of1924 the school was officially dedicated as Mount Carmel High School;

WHEREAS, The motto of Mount Carmel High School reads "to live with zeal for God, for life, for learning";

WHEREAS, The entire athletic department, and in particular the Mount Carmel Caravan baseball team led by head varsity coach Brian Hurry, upholds that motto;

WHEREAS, high school athletics, as practiced by the Mount Carmel baseball program, help teach discipline, sacrifice, teamwork and sportsmanship to countless young men and women across the state and country;

WHEREAS, In furtherance of these principals, on Saturday June 8"¹ the Mount Carmel Caravan faced off against the Libertyville Wildcats at Silver Cross Field in Joliet for the IHSA Baseball Class 4A state championship;

WHEREAS, Both teams were held scoreless through the first five innings of the contest as Jeremy Kravetz of Mount Carmel and Nate Cote of Libertyville High School stymied opposing hitters;

WHEREAS, In the top of the tf^h, Mount Carmel's Jason Gasser doubled home Jerry Houston Jr. to break the scoreless tie, and later in the inning Tom Hayes knocked in Jason Gasser to give the Caravan what would be an insurmountable 2 run lead;

WHEREAS, In the bottom of the 6'^h, Libertyville battled valiantly back as Justin Gurnaccio singled home Riley Lees to cut the lead in half to 2-1;

WHEREAS, The Caravan's Jeremy Kravetz held that lead and spun a 7 inning complete game for the victory;

WHEREAS, The Mount Carmel Caravan were crowned the IHSA Baseball 4A state champions;

WHEREAS, We congratulate student athletes: Jerry Houston, Jack Pappas, Declan Dennehy, Kevin O'Keefe, Tom Hayes, Jason Gasser, Ako Thomas, Elliot Chibe, Jordan Lillybridge, Jeremy Kravetz, Gergory Pitts, Joe Kennedy, John Wirthel, Joshua Sowers, Michael Petet, Jamal Martin, CJ Pakeltis, BJ Faulkner, Richard Fordon, Jeremy Houston, Austin Dodson, Bret Zima, Justin Gonzalez, Marko Boricich, Beau Filkins, Dave Dobrinich, Brad Jerantowski, Greg Ploszaj, Nicholas Wheeler, Nelson Munoz, Elon Bustamonte, Malik Carpenter, and Scott Kapers and coaches Brian Hurry, John Difilippo, Ish Jaquez, Mike Himes, and Tom Stelmaszek on a fantastic season

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled here this 26^th Day of June, 2013 AD, congratulate the Mount Carmel Caravan baseball team on its IHSA 4A state championship;
