Resolution Honoring Ann's Bakery of Ukrainian Village for over 30 years of service to the
West Town Community Area
WHEREAS, in the year 2022, Ann's Bakery on Chicago Ave. is celebrating over 30 years of service to Ukrainian Village and the greater West Town community area of Chicago; and,
WHEREAS, The City Council of the City of Chicago has been informed of this monumental occasion by The Honorable Brian Hopkins, Alderman of the 2nd Ward; and,
WHEREAS, the story of Ann's Bakery starts many years before it's inaugural service in 1991, with owner and founder Wolodymyr "Walter" Siryj coming to the United States in 1976 at the age of 27; and,
WHEREAS, Walter—known as Uncle Walter to his affectionate Nephew Peter—came to the United States with a wealth of goals, pride and ambition, setting out to make a life in America while also paying homage to his motherland of Ukraine, her customs; and,
WHEREAS, After more than three decades of serving some of the finest baked goods in the City of Chicago, Ann's Bakery holds the distinction as not only a gastronomic designation, but one for new Ukrainian immigrants to Chicago. Under Walter's leadership, his business became a de facto embassy to new Ukrainian arrivals looking to find opportunity In Chicago; and,
WHEREAS, when Walter is not serving up delicious products to fellow Ukrainians who seek a taste of home, he is embracing Chicagoans of all walks of life and introducing them to the culture of his home country by way of passionate cooking; and,
WHEREAS, the family roots that Wolodymyr Siryj planted decades ago are mature and blossoming through his daughters Luba, Oksana, and Nadia; and therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that We, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this 14th day of December in the year Two Thousand and Twenty Two congratulate Wolodymyr Siryj on the jubilant milestone of more than three decades of success in business; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Siryj family for their contributions to the Ukrainian-American community of Chicago; and,
