MEMORIAL RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF ALEXANDRIA IMANI BURGOS

 

WHEREAS, Seven years ago, Alexandria Imani Burgos, loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, and cousin, was tragically murdered when she was struck by a bullet; and

WHEREAS, On April 15, 2021, Alexandria's family planted a memorial tree in the Learning Garden at Von Steuben Metropolitan High School in honor of her memory; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this commemoration by the Honorable Samantha Nugent, Alderman ofthe 39th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Alexandria was an 18 year old graduate from Von Steuben Metropolitan High School on the Northside ofthe City, and planned to attend Wright College to become a social worker; her goal was to work in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center and her heart was set on helping children in need; and

 

WHEREAS, described as kind and bubbly, Alexandria was great with children and adults alike, and worked at the Niles YMCA; she always had a smile on her face and was known for making everyone in the room laugh; and

 

WHEREAS, On October 19, 2014, Alexandria arrived at a party, and moments later was shot and killed by a bullet that entered the apartment where the party was being held; Alexandria was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital and tragically passed away that night; and

 

WHEREAS, Alexandria is preceded in death by two grandparents, Gladys, nee Rodriguez, and Secundino Correa; and leaves to cherish her memory her parents, Milagros, nee Correa, and Rafael Burgos; her brother, Christian Burgos; her grandparents, Gloria, nee Rosario, Samuel Burgos; her aunts and uncles, Sandy (Richie) Toler, Zenaida (Harry) Rivera, Shirley (Alberto) Beascochea, Carmen (William) Alcozer; and several cousins; and

 

WHEREAS, Alexandria will live on as a reminder and symbol of the innocent lives cut short by senseless gun violence; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-first day of April, 2021, do hereby honor the life and memory of Alexandria Imani Burgos; and

SAMANTHA NUGENT Alderman, 39th Ward

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Alexandria Imani Burgos as a sign of our honor and respect.
