RESOLUTION HONORING THE SCHORSCH VILLAGE IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION

ON THEIR 90TH ANNIVERSARY

 

WHEREAS, For over 100 years, the community now known as "Schorsch Village" has been one of the best places to live and raise families in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, In the early 1900's, the Schorsch family, especially Louis and Albert Schorsch, founded this community in parts of Dunning and Belmont Heights on the Northwest side of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, In 1931, Schorsch Village community members, including the Schorsch Brothers, founded the Schorsch Village Improvement Association (SVIA); and

WHEREAS, The SVIA is dedicated to serving their community by providing valuable resident services, including community meetings and information concerning area events; and

WHEREAS, By the 1960's, the SVIA expanded their community efforts by partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps "Toys for Tots" program, installing alley lights, and creating storm sewers on Roscoe Street; and

WHEREAS, In 1962, the SVIA gained National recognition for their sponsored annual Christmas lighting display known as, "Candy Cane Lane", and were featured in magazines throughout the Nation; and

WHEREAS, The SVIA connects the community with a local polling place, fundraisers for youth basketball and football, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, community forums, such as CAPS meetings, and their instrumental role in getting a new fieldhouse and gym within Shabonna Park; and

WHEREAS, In 2016, Schorsch Village was named the 24th best community in America by a National real estate firm based on affordability, walkability, crime statistics, and quality of schools; and

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council of Chicago, gathered here this fourteenth day of October 2021, do hereby call public attention to honor the Schorsch Village Improvement Association for their 90th Anniversary and their continued role as a well respected community leader in the City of Chicago; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this Resolution be presented to the Schorsch Village Improvement Association as a token of our gratitude for their leadership and hard work serving the residents of Schorsch Village.
