SUBSTITUTE ORDINANCE

 

                     WHEREAS, Special Olympics-Chicago will.celebrate its. 50 .Anniversary~during~July of

2018; and

WHEREAS, Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities that provides year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports to over 5 million athletes, ages 8 years old and up, from 172 different countries; and

WHEREAS, Special Olympics has been a successful force in providing children and adults with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community; and

 

WHEREAS, Special Olympics continues to be a local, national, and global support network that brings families together in a caring, positive way; and

 

WHEREAS, the First International Special Olympics Games were held in Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968, where 1,000 athletes from the United States and Canada took part in a one-day, Olympic style athletic competition; and

WHEREAS, Special Olympics Chicago was organized by the Honorable Anne M. Burke and supported by Eunice Kennedy Shriver and the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation; and

WHEREAS, the Honorable Anne M. Burke's work teaching children with special needs and involvement with organizations helping young people propelled her to establish Special Olympics Chicago; and

WHEREAS, over the last fifty years, the Honorable Anne M. Burke has furthered the mission of Special Olympics Chicago which is dedicated to building a community of acceptance and inclusion in communities around Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Special Olympics Chicago works in partnership with the Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Park District and has grown to serve more than 5,000 athletes annually through 22 different athletic competitions; and

WHEREAS, Special Olympics Chicago continues to foster the physical and mental health of children and adults with intellectual disabilities and provide them with sports training and competitions that allow them to share their gifts, skills, and friendship; and

 

WHEREAS, during its last half-century of service, Special Olympics Chicago has enriched the lives of countless children and adults, with and without special needs, from communities all around Chicago; and

WHEREAS, for its momentous accomplishment, Special Olympics Chicago is deserving ofthe highest recognition and appreciation of this City and its residents; now, therefore,

 

 

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

 

                                          -                     SECTION-1.--That-theXomraissioner.of-Transportation is hereby authorizecLand                     

directed -to renamethe- portion-of the. street -known as."Museum. Campus Drive". that extends from the intersection of East 18th Drive and Burnham Harbor Drive to East McFetridge Drive, to be now named "Special Olympics Drive."

SECTION 2. The Commissioner of Transportation shall notify, by certified or registered mail, the change in the street name authorized by this ordinance, not less than 30 days prior to such change, the local election authorities and the post office serving the area affected by the name change.

 

SECTION 3. The Commissioner of Transportation is authorized and directed to do all such acts and things, including the placement of street name signs with the new street name, and to execute and deliver any and all agreements, documents, instruments, or certificates, as she deems necessary, advisable, or appropriate, to effectuate this ordinance. All of the acts which are in conformity with the intent and purposes of this ordinance, whether heretofore or hereafter taken or done, shall be and the same are in all respects ratified, confirmed, authorized, and approved hereby in all respects.

SECTION 4. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect upon passage and publication.
