RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Jose R. Sanchez, a trusted health care leader in the Puerto Rican community, will officially celebrate his 10th Anniversary as President and Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago on October 18, 2020;and
WHEREAS, Jose R. Sanchez, Chicago's only Latino hospital CEO, has enjoyed a 30-plus year career as a health care executive and possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience in his field; and
WHEREAS, As President and CEO of Norwegian American Hospital, Jose R. Sanchez has strived to improve the quality of services provided to more than 112,000 patients annually; and
WHEREAS, Among Jose R. Sanchez's first major undertakings at Norwegian American Hospital was to lead the management executive team to critically assess and refine the quality of all systems, structures and services; and
WHEREAS, Jose R. Sanchez has skillfully demonstrated that he is committed to pursuing collaborative and innovative solutions to combat the health care challenges of the Humboldt Park, West Town, Wicker Park, Logan Square and Austin communities; and
WHEREAS, Responding to the disproportionate number of COVID-19 infections and related deaths in underserved communities with high minority populations, Jose R. Sanchez partnered Norwegian with the Governor's office, Rincon Family Services and the Vida/SIDA program from the Puerto Rican Cultural Center to provide outreach and screening; and
WHEREAS, Jose R. Sanchez has long sought to raise public awareness of the prevalence of Diabetes within the Latino community, a dangerous underlying condition which can heighten COVID-19 complications; and
WHEREAS, Prior to joining Norwegian American Hospital, Jose R. Sanchez served as the Senior Vice President of the Generations +/Northern Manhattan Health Network, one of the largest health care networks in the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation; and
WHEREAS, During his esteemed tenure in New York, Jose R. Sanchez oversaw three acute care hospitals of which two were level one trauma centers, and 34 community-based health centers in East Harlem, Central Harlem and the South Bronx in New York City; and

WHEREAS, Jose R. Sanchez has been a licensed social worker since 1979 and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the City College of New York, a Master of Social Work from Adelphi University and an honorary doctorate from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor, and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of September, 2020, do hereby recognize and warmly congratulate Jose R. Sanchez on ten highly distinguished years of leadership at Norwegian American Hospital; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Sunday, October 18, 2020, shall be officially recognized as Jose R. Sanchez Day throughout Chicago in honor of his many remarkable contributions to our City; and
