SALUTE TO THE RANCH TRIANGLE COMMUNITY CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

WHEREAS, On February 20, 1964, nine citizens founded the RANCH Triangle Community Conservation Association to unite the people who live in, own property or work in the Chicago community bounded by Racine Avenue, Armitage Avenue, North Avenue, Clyboum Avenue and Halsted Street; and

WHEREAS, This notable community organization was formed in order to make that community a secure and stable family neighborhood, to improve the physical and social conditions of the community and to undertake any action deemed appropriate toward the realization of these goals; and

WHEREAS, The original members, led by the late Sarah Sess, focused primarily on preserving the character of the community and encouraging landlords to maintain and preserve their historic properties. To accomplish this, they regularly appeared in housing court to urge the protection of the historic buildings. The decades-long effort paved the way for the Armitage-Halsted Landmark District, established in 2003, and one of only three commercial landmark districts within the City of Chicago. Their successful conservation of vintage homes and businesses led to their inclusion in the 1976 Sheffield National Historic District, one of the first in the nation; and

WHEREAS, For more than a half-century, these concerned neighbors have continued to volunteer their time, effort and passion to ensure the RANCH Triangle remains a desirable place to live, work, raise children, shop, run local businesses and be entertained. Today, this vital community is home to the world famous Old Town School of Folk Music, Steppenwolf Theater, the 110-year-old Gepperth's Meat Market as well as a wide variety of shops, restaurants and boutiques; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of this noteworthy organization's 50 years of praiseworthy accomplishment; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together on this 5th Day of March, 2014, do hereby salute the RANCH Triangle Community Conservation Association on the occasion of its Golden Anniversary and extend our very best wishes for its continuing future success
