RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING GLORIA HAFER ON 55 YEARS OF PROVIDING CULINARY EDUCATION TO STUDENTS OF THE 10TH WARD

WHEREAS, Chicago Chef Gloria Hafer has provided outstanding culinary education services to the people of the 10th Ward and the Southeast Side of Chicago for 55 years; and

 

WHEREAS, A graduate of Chicago Public Schools and Chicago State University, Chef Hafer began-her career in 1965 as a junior counselor at Calumet Park making $1.50 per day; and

 

WHEREAS, Chef Hafer is a retired Chicago Public Schools teacher who taught at Douglas Taylor Elementary School for 34 years, and also taught at George Washington High School where she developed and opened the Washington RJD Culinary Institute; and

 

WHEREAS, Chef Hafer has been the head chef of Chicago's Afterschool Matters culinary program for over 20 years and is currently teaching a beginning and advanced culinary apprenticeship program for Afterschool Matters at Eastside Methodist Church; she has taught culinary arts for Afterschool Matters at different locations throughout the 10th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Chef Hafer teaches four healthy eating classes for senior citizens at Chicago Department of Aging Senior Centers, and from 2006 to 2008 she taught healthy eating classes to the parents of students to help stem the increase in child obesity in the City; and

 

WHEREAS, Chef Hater's students have been invited by Starbucks corporate office to present their culinary skills at the Distinguished Restaurants of North America Conference (DiRona) in Seattle, Washington; and

 

WHEREAS, Chef Hafer's former students have gone on to study with some of Chicago's leading chefs, including Martial Nougier, Gale Grand, Patrick Sheerin, Stephen Henry, and the late Charlie Trotter, and several former students have pursued careers in the food industry; and

 

WHEREAS, Chef Hafer and her students have been featured in Cooking Light Magazine, Food Channel online segments, on PBS and on local Chicago television stations such as WFLD (FOX), NBC, ABC, and CBS, and have been the subject of articles in the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago-Tribune, the Daily Southtown, the Southeast Chicago Observer, The Chicago Teachers Union paper, the North Shore Skyline, Teen Beat Southeast Side Edition, and other various publications; and

 

WHEREAS, Chef Hafer arid her culinary education programs have received numerous awards, including the Chicago Tribune 2003 Good Eating Award, Mayor Richard M. Daley's Excellence in Education Award, former 10th Ward Alderman John Pope's Outstanding Achievement in Education Award, 10th Ward High School Teacher of the Year Award, and received a State Proclamation for Education by former State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this nineteenth day of February, 2019, do hereby congratulate Chef Gloria Hafer on 55 y^ars of service providing culinary education to students in the 10th Ward; and
