RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago was once the Soul Capitol, bringing the expression and vibrant creativity of soul music to the world; and
WHEREAS, Jackie Taylor, born in Chicago Illinois, and raised in the Cabrini Green housing project, rose from modest roots to become a distinguished director, producer, actress, singer, playwright and founder and executive director of the Black Ensemble Theater; and
WHEREAS, On Wednesday March 26th a group of record industry members assembled to acknowledge and pay tribute to Jackie Taylor for her contribution to the City of Chicago as a visionary storyteller of Chicago's soul music history through her recent critically-acclaimed and "Jeff Recommended" production Chicago's Golden Soul; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by the Honorable James Cappleman, Alderman of the 46th Ward; and
WHEREAS, as the Founder of the 35 year old Black Ensemble Theater, Jackie Taylor has created a strong institution committed to eradicating racism, recognized throughout the nation for its outstanding original productions and exceptional educational outreach programs; and
WHEREAS, The Business Partners of the Chamber for Uptown are happy to have a world class theater in the community that features productions highlighting the stories and music of Chicago's iconic music legends; and
WHEREAS, Chicago's Record Row was one of the most vibrant and hit-making companies that made Chicago's soul a universally beloved sound, and music industry professionals are extremely proud of the presentations the Black Ensemble Theater has produced to keep Soul Music alive; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council asks all citizens to turn up the music of the 60's and 70's, when Chicago was the Soul Capitol and headquarters for great music makers like, Curtis Mayfield, Jackie Wilson, Major Lance, Jerry Butler, Billy Butler, Gene Chandler, Howlin Wolf, Carl Davis, Syl Johnson, Otis Clay, Marshall Thompson, Walter Jackson, The Chi-Lites, The Impressions, Tyrone Davis, The Five Stairsteps, Barbara Acklin, Jackie Ross, Fantella Bass, Etta James, Ruby Andrews, Hplle Thee Maxwell and record companies like Vee-Jay, Brunswick, DeKar, OKeh, Curtom, Chi-Sound, Constellation & Chess; now, therefore
