WHEREAS, On Sunday, February 1, 2015, the Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom called Marie Artillia Dernier to her eternal journey; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Lona Lane, Alderman of the 18th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Marie was born on November 11, 1926 in Central City, Kentucky; she was the first of eight children born to the union of Oscar Rhoades and Audrey Smith; and
WHEREAS, Marie received h'er formal education in Kentucky, she furthered her education in Chicago, became a teller at Drover's National Bank, and a registered beautician until allergies to chemicals ended her career as a beautician. She developed her waitressing skills to serve eighteen years at both the Stockyard Inn and the International Amphitheater of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, she was a member of the Chicago Roller Derby, a seasoned traveler, created objects of beauty and played the organ. Marie earned her Friendship degree in the Women's Chapter of the Loyal Order of Moose; and
WHEREAS, Marie married and divorced George Stephen, and later married Fred E. Dernier, with whom she enjoyed retirement in Hometown, Illinois, until Fred's death in June 2003; and
WHEREAS, Marie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Oscar and Audrey Rhoades (nee Smith); two husbands, George Stephen and Fred E. Dernier; brothers, Billy and Joseph (Betty Jean); two sisters, Luella (Louie), and Virginia (Harry); and leaves behind, to cherish her precious memories, her brothers, Sam (Rena), Wilburn (Marge), and sister Shirley (Elwood), devoted nephew, Wilburn "Skip" (Cynthia); nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives, and friends; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here in assembly this eighteenth day of March 2015 A.D., do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of Marie Artillia Dernier and extend to her family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Marie Artillia Dernier.
