MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
 
WHEREAS, God in His Infinite Wisdom has called Torrence F. Shorter, SR., most beloved citizen to his eternal reward, Sunday June 22, 2014; and
 
WHEREAS, This July body has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Walter Burnett Jr, Alderman of the 27th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Torrence was bom on July 22, 1973 in Chicago, Illinois to Sam and Gertrude Shorter; and WHEREAS, Torrence is preceded in death by his sister, Sherry Scott; and
WHEREAS, Torrence confessed a hope in Christ at an early age under Bishop Willie Jordan at St. Marks Missionary Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, Torrence attended Martin A. Ryerson Elementary and Orr High School. After graduating from high school he pursued his passion of cooking, he attended culinary arts school and received his sanitization license and began his career as a chef; and
WHEREAS, Torrence had a love for kids and the community. He was very active in Blocks Together, Action Now, PAC, No Child Left Behind, Parent Action, Breakthrough Minster, LSC Board and many other organizations; and
WHEREAS, On July 24, 1999, Torrence married Cicely L. Shorter, who was his high school sweetheart. They were married 14 years, until he departed this life; and
WHEREAS, He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Cicely Shorter, four sons; Torrence F. Shorter Jr., Terrence T. Shorter, Jerry Shorter and Joshua Shorter, two daughters; Kiara Shorter and Geneva Shorter. His parents, Sam F. Shorter and Gertrude Shorter. Four brothers; Denis Miller, Dence Shorter, Karl Scott and Jerry C. (Michelle) Shorter, three sisters; Marilyn Johnson, Trinette (Tom) White and Roshanda Shorter-Walker. Mother-in-law, Lillie Davis and three sister-in-laws; Annetta (Aaron) Williams, Roxanne Clark, Althea Barr and one brother-in law Willie J. Barr Jr. a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends; and
WHEREAS, A cherished friend and supportive family member to all, Torrence will be deeply missed but the remembrance of his character, dedication and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this thirtieth day of July, 2014 A.D., do hereby commemorate Mr. Torrence F. Shorter, Sr. for his many lifetime contributions and do hereby extend to his family and many friends our sincere condolences.
