friend and colleague, Alderman Michael D. Chandler, on his sixteen years of
dedicated and outstanding service to the people of the 24th Ward and the City
of Chicago; and      ■    ■> >
 
: WHEREAS, Born and raised in Chicago, Alderman Chandler inherited his spirit of service and community involvement from his parents, Minnie and Kermit, who were among the first African-American residents of this Cityto own d grocery store; and
 
WHEREAS, The youngest of seven children. Alderman Chandler attended Presentation Catholic School and Harold Washington College; and
 
; WHEREAS, After graduating from high school and serving in the Air Force as d jet engine mechanic stationed in California, Alderman Chandler returned to Chicago, where he founded Community In Action, Inc., and dedicated himself to leading grassroots environmental dnd qnti-crime efforts; qnd
 
WHEREAS, A supervisor of building inspectors for thirteen years ih the Chicago Department of Buildings, Alderman Chandler familiarized himself with the inner workings of city government and, qfter being elected to the Chicago City Council in 1995, he used his experience to improve his West Side ward, which includes parts of the North Lawnddle, West Garfield Pqrk qnd South Austin neighborhoods; and . ;:'V
 
WHEREAS, Widely admired for his leadership and vision. Alderman Chandler improved the quality of life in the 24th Ward by attracting new businesses there, including a community center, movie theater and much-, needed Dominick's grocery store. He worked tirelessly to prevent illegal dumping in the ward and to secure federal funds to remove its infamous "Mount Henry" garbage pile. Alderman's Chandler's many efforts on behalf of the 24th Ward were deeply appreciated by his constituents. Alderman Chandler was the first African American from that Ward to be elected for three consecutive terms; and . •'
 
 
WHEREAS; Throughout his tenure in office, Alderman Chandler worked hard to combat illegal drug trade in the North Lawndale area through street harrowing and the installation of cul-de-sacs and traffic circles, to create jobs and to improve infrastructure in the 24th Ward, and to bridge the gap between city government, social services, local businesses and ward residents; and;
 
WHEREAS, The proud father of two sorts, Alderman Chandler is deeply committed to the well-being and education of our youth; and
 
■ WHEREAS, Alderman Chandler combined great passion for his job with
attention to duty, arid he inspired his constituents to takepride in their
neighborhoods; and      ' ',
 
WHEREAS, Alderman Chandler has served With distinction oh many
Chicago City Council committees, including, most recently, as a member of the
Committee on the Budget and Government Operations; Comrnittee on
Committees, Rules and Ethics;, Committee on Housing and Real Estate;
Committee on Human Relations; Committee on Econornic, Capital arid
Technology Development; and Committee on License and Consumer Protection;

1 BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this sixth day of May, 2015, do hereby extend to Alderman Michael D. Chandler our heartfelt gratitude and thanks for his many years of exceptional service to the people of Chicago, arid our best wishes for coritinued success in all ot his future endeavors; arid
