Ladies and Gentlemen:
I transmit herewith a resolution regarding our departing friend and colleague, Alderman Doherty.
Your favorable consideration of this resolution will be appreciated.
 
 
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Members of this Chamber are proud to congratulate our friend and colleague, Alderman Brian G. Doherty, the City Council's sole Republican, on his retirement from the City Council after 20 years of dedicated service to the people of the 41st Ward and the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Born the oldest boy to Irish immigrants, Alderman Doherty, a Chicago native, graduated from Saint Angela Elementary School and Lane Technical High School, and earned a Bachelor's degree in business management from Northeastern University in 1984, and a Master's degree in Urban Studies from Loyola University; and
WHEREAS, Like many of his.constituents, Alderman Doherty grew up in a traditional Chicago Democratic household, but switched parties during the Reagan Revolution; and
WHEREAS, Alderman Doherty began his long and distinguished career in politics in 1984 as a legislative aide in the office of his mentor, State Representative Roger McAuliffe, where he learned lessons about politics as an art and science, and the importance of customer satisfaction; and
WHEREAS, First elected in 1991, Alderman Doherty has been a champion ofthe safety and well-being of the residents of his Ward; and 1
WHEREAS, Alderman Doherty has sponsored numerous ordinances and initiatives, including projects regarding economic development, and under his leadership the 41st Ward has experienced a revitalization of many commercial retail districts; and
WHEREAS, As a valuable member ofthe City Council, Alderman Doherty has served on the City Council Committees on Committees, Rules, and Ethics; Aviation; Budget and Government Operations; Finance; License and Consumer Protection; Transportation and Public Way; Historical Landmark Preservation; and as the Vice-Chairman of Traffic Control and Safety; and
WHEREAS, A consistent advocate for more efficient, less intrusive government, Alderman Doherty, renowned for his fiscal conservatism, has a record of opposing tax increases and supporting strong ethics reforms and more government transparency; and
WHEREAS, A highly respected public official and prominent leader, Alderman Doherty has been recognized and admired for his many contributions to the citizens of Chicago, his dedicated service in various civic and community organizations, and his commitment to many important causes; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this fourth day of May, 2011, do hereby commend Alderman Brian Doherty for his years of distinguished service as Alderman of the 41st Ward and as a member of this City Council, and do hereby express to him our good wishes for his future endeavors; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a .suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Alderman Doherty as a sign of our deep respect and good wishes.
