MEMORIAL RESOLUTION HONORING VELMA P. LITTLE
WHEREAS, In His infinite wisdom, Almighty God has chosen to call His precious daughter, Velma P. Little, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and citizen of her community, to her eternal reward June 27, 2013, at the age of eighty-six; and
WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of her transition by the esteemed Alderman of the 8th Ward, and Chairman of the Committee on Committees, Rules and Ethics, Michelle A. Harris; and
WHEREAS, Velma was born in Asheville, North Carolina February 13, 1927 to her loving parents, David and Julia Payne. She was the youngest of her nine children. She and her eight siblings, Samuel, James, Frederick, Lillian, Daisy, Monzella, Louise, and Julia, brought much joy and laughter into the Payne Family home; and
WHEREAS, Velma's parents had passed by the time she was fourteen. In 1944, at age 17, she moved to Chicago and made it her home. She was a young adult filled with an abundance of charm, intelligence and patience and in 1945 she captured the heart of the young man who was to become her soul mate and loving husband, Elgin E. Little, II. After their marriage, a special bond that couldn't be severed between her and her mother-in-law (Mother Bessie Botto) was formed. In September 1996 God called her beloved husband, Elgin E. Little, to his eternal resting place after over 50 years, 8 months and 4 days of their marriage; and
WHEREAS, Velma was blessed with four children, Elgin, Vernon, La'Vel and Michael and God sent her another son, Henry McDaniel, who preceded her in death. Velma was a graduate of Cortez Peter's Business College, and American Conservatory College of Music. She was a dedicated employee at Follett Publishing Company and Chicago Public School as a Music Teacher. After years of dedication she retired in 1974; and
WHEREAS, Velma's Christian walk included Woodlawn AME Church, Holy Latter Rain Church, and Roberts Temple COGIC. She was a founding member of God's House of All Nations in 1958 with her mother-in-law, Mother Bessie Botto and her Spiritual assignments were as First Lady,^Organist, Sunday School teacher. Choir Director, Missionary, Minister of music, Prayer Warrior and Senior Advisor; and
WHEREAS, Velma P. Little was a warm and loving person who enriched the lives of the young and the old. She leaves behind to celebrate her generous life, her devoted family, Elgin E. Little (Sandra), Vernon E. Little (Mildred), Dr. La'Vel F. Hardy (Rexsell) and Michael (Doc) Little; seven grandchildren, Vernon II, Vernee' (Laroy), Vernell, Rexsell Jr. (Tiffany), Jasmine, Michael II (Danitra) and Magic; six great grandchildren, Kynadee Carter, Ariana Taylor, Rexsell (Tre) Hardy III, Michael Little III, Daviaw Little and Magic Little II; two spiritual daughters, LaJean Burton and Frances Cunningham; a god-daughter, Sheila Perry; nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members; her caregiver, Janelle Holmes; her church family 'God's House of All Nations' and many friends; now therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered there this sixteenth day of October 2013 A.D., do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of such a noteworthy lady, Velma P. Little, and extend to her family and friends our deepest sympathy.
Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy for this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Velma P. Little.
