RESOLUTION HONORING CARL F. WILSON
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that the members of the City Council of the City of Chicago are hereby informed of the 101 st birthday of Carl F. Wilson
WHEREAS, Carl F. Wilson was born June 30, 1913 in Evanston, IL, and was educated in both Evanston and Chicago. He began his working career at a General Motors Diesel plant before being drafted into the Army of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Carl Wilson was inducted into the Army at Fort Custer, Michigan, on June 7, 1943, and was assigned to the newly formed 575th Engineer Company, an all African-American separate unit, which fought, cleared debris, and built Allied infrastructure from Okinawa to Pusan Korea. He celebrated his 30th birthday a few weeks after being inducted into the Army; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations from January 31, 1944 until January 17, 1946. He was then honorably discharged January 26, 1946. For his service in the Army, he was awarded The Good Conduct Medal for FIDELITY, EFFICIENCY and HONOR, The Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with 1 Bronze Battle Star, The World War II Victory Medal, and 4 Overseas Service Bars; and
WHEREAS, following the war, Mr. Wilson worked in a number of auto rebuilding plants and married Louise. Their union lasted for over forty-five years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson began teaching adult education classes, at Midway Technical Institute, a private vocational school, it was at this school that he met his future business partners; and
WHEREAS, Carl F. Wilson is a co-founder and former Treasurer of QUINCO Manufacturing Company, a multimillion-dollar metal fabrication business. This very successful enterprise produced auto parts and other steel stampings, for Ford Motor Co., Chevrolet, International Harvester, Allison, Detroit Diesel and IBM; and
WHEREAS, Carl F. Wilson is the published author of"Entrepreneurs, Listen!" the story of five African-American men with a dream of building a successful manufacturing business; and
WHEREAS, Carl F. Wilson is a member of Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 7186 in Evanston and American Legion Post 2910 in Evanston; THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the Chicago City Council assemble this 30th day of July 2014, do hereby congratulate Mr. Carl F. Wilson for his countless years of service to the City and the United States of America, and hereby
express our best wishes for his health and happiness; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to former Army Sergeant Carl F. Wilson, Army of the United States.
