T O THE HONORABLE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I transmit herewith, together with Aldermen Hopkins, Sadlowski-Garza, Silverstein. Waguespack, O'Shea, Tunney, Osterman, Cappleman, Martin, Mitts, Hadden, Dowell, Ervin, Vasquez and La Spata, a resolution celebrating Armed Forces Day.
Your favorable consideration ofthis resolution will be appreciated.
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On May 21, 2022, the United States celebrated Armed Forces Day; and
WHEREAS, On Armed Forces Day, we share our unending appreciation for the proud patriots who answer the call to serve in the United States military, taking the sacred oath to defend our Constitution; and
WHEREAS, The oath taken by those who serve includes that they will "support and defend the Constitution ofthe United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic," something that we all need to remember in these fractured times; and
WHEREAS, Armed Forces Day pays tribute to those who serve in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard and Reserves, Navy, and Space Force; and
WHEREAS, The United States first celebrated the holiday in 1950, celebrated the third Saturday of every May; and
WHEREAS, Morethan 1.3 million active duty members serve in just the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy, while over three hundred thousand more serve in the United States National Guard; and
WHEREAS, We recognize the sacrifices that our service members and their families make on our behalf, as the service members put themselves in harm's way and their families and friends support them, sometimes from half a world away and sometimes moving from place to place; and
WHEREAS, The contributions and sacrifices of those who serve in the United States Armed Forces have been vital in projecting the military strength of a nation that has bountiful natural resources and is one of the largest countries in the world by land or by population; and
WHEREAS, The Armed Forces is a unit as diverse as Chicago, bringing together people of all kinds under the common goal of protecting the nation; and
WHEREAS, Chicago contains various installations that serve the Armed Forces, including at least two active armories; and
WHEREAS, Chicago works closely with Armed Forces personnel, as so many Reservists work within the City government, as it works with the Coast Guard to protect our waters, and as it works with the Air Force and Navy during the Air and Water Show; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-fifth day of May 2022, in celebration of Armed Forces Day do hereby honor the currently serving members of the armed services and their families.
