MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR "ISABEL LOPEZ WAY

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this chamber learned of the death of Isabel Lopez on September 21, 2017 at the age of seventeen; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Silvana Tabares, Alderman of the 23rd Ward; and

WHEREAS, Isabel was born to loving parents. Victoria (Aguirre) and Roberto Lopez, who later gave birth to Isabel's beloved younger sister, Alexis. They treasured the closeness of their family; and

WHEREAS, Isabel was a student at Queen of Peace High School. In her school and home community, she was well known as someone whose warm heart, caring manner, and bright energy could light up a room and make everyone in it feel welcomed; and

WHEREAS, Isabel's passion for dancing was present from a very young age. She began dancing competitively as a child, always working very hard and being supportive to her team members. Even before she knew her fateful diagnosis, Isabel competed in a team dance competition in Bloomington, Illinois, when she was already feeling unwell. In her caring way. she did not want to let her team down since they had just advanced to the State competition; and

WHEREAS, Isabel received her cancer diagnosis on February 12, 2015. while she was in her freshman year at high school. During her many medical treatments and hospitalizations, the life skills Isabel learned through dance - grace, stamina, resilience, and perseverance - helped her endure the painful and difficult last two and a half years of her life. Even during her most difficult days at the hospital, Isabel's foremost concern was for the weii-being of her parents and sister; and

WHEREAS, Left to cherish Isabel's memory are her loving parents, Victoria (nee Aguirre) and Roberto Lopez, and her 'precious sister, Alexis; her devoted grandparents, Jesse and Ernestine (nee Gutierrez) Aguirre; Margarita (Nee Guevara), and the late Espiridon Lopez; and her aunts and uncles, Joseph (Christine). Steven (Rosemary). Anthony (Veronica) Aguirre, Rebecca Lopez, Claudia Fortuna Lopez and Marisa Lopez. Isabel was a cousin to many and dearly loved by all her extended family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Isabel positively influenced the lives of all who knew and loved her. Her generosity of spirit, kindness, strong character, compassion, and loving ways, will live on through her beloved family and friends' treasured memories of her life; and

WHEREAS, Isabel's community came forward to honor the legacy of this courageous young woman and to dedicate the 5200 block of South Rutherford Avenue, as "Isabel Lopez Way"; now and therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we the Mayor and.Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this thirteenth day of March, 2019. do hereby extend our heartfelt sorrow upon learning ofthe passing of Isabel Lopez and extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOL VED, That suitable copies of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Isabel Lopez as a sign of our honor and respect.
