RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Bernice Jefferson was born in Madison Mississippi on November 14,1913. She is a proud member of New Original Church of God in Christ, and the Reverend Thomas Jackson Jr. would like to call special attention to her 101st birth year; and
WHEREAS, Bernice was raised by Best and Millie McDougal. She married Jesse Jefferson, and their union was blessed with three children, Marie, Jesse Jr., and Annette. Bernice moved to Chicago in the early 1940's and worked as a cook in private homes before opening her own restaurant and candy store; and
WHEREAS, Bernice, an enthusiastic, active, much loved resident of the City of Chicago with a zest for living life, celebrated her 101st birthday on November 14, 2014, thereby reaching a milestone few are fortunate to achieve; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of this prestigious occasion by the Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward; and
WHEREAS, After closing her restaurant, she joined the Church and became an Ordained Minister. Every Sunday she would pick up the neighborhood children, pile them in her station wagon and head to church where she would sing and teach the gospel; and
WHEREAS, Bernice would minister to all and help anyone who asked. So many people benefitted from her oil blessings and prophesy. Whenever she received a call that a relative or friend was sick and needed her, she would drive to them and nurse them back to health with her excellent cooking and care; and
WHEREAS, She purchased a two-flat in Chicago where she lived until she moved to a senior building and continues to cook and sell dinners. Despite hip replacement surgery on both hips, Bernice still loves going to church, helps with cooking, dresses herself, maintains the flower garden and loves going to the field to pick vegetables. Bernice has always lived her life for the Glory of God; and
WHEREAS, Cognizant of the history that Bernice Jefferson has witnessed and to which she has contributed, Bernice is richly deserving of adulation and good wishes as she celebrates the beginning of her one hundredth and first year; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this tenth day of December 2014, do hereby extend our deepest thanks for the continued contributions of Bernice Jefferson and wish her much happiness in future; and
