RESOLUTION HONORING MONICA HASLIP'S 20 YEARS AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF LITTLE BLACK PEARL
 
 
 
WHEREAS, the Little Black Pearl Workshop, Inc. has enabled Ms. Monica Haslip to be an unbridled champion for the African American Arts Community; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Haslip's journey began 20 years ago as one of the nation's youngest founders of a community-based arts organization; and
 
WHEREAS, her vision for that organization resulted in a premier Art and Design Center servicing youth and adults here in Chicago; and
 
WHEREAS, the founding of Little Black Pearl Workshop in 1994 has since exposed countless young Chicagoans to the contributions made by African Americans to the art world; and
 
WHEREAS, Little Black Pearl Workshop is celebrating 20 years of enriching youth, families and communities through the arts and education, exemplifying 20 years of development, innovation, community, partnership and globalism; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Haslip's leadership has received recognition from such prestigious individuals and organizations as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Columbia College, University of Illinois, Southeast Chicago Commission, the Illinois Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects, Essence Magazine, Black Enterprise Magazine, Crain's Business Magazine, the African American Arts Alliance of Chicago, Chicago Magazine, Yulkuum Jerrang Conference in Australia and more; and
 
WHEREAS, in addition to her tireless contributions to Little Black Pearl Workshop, Ms. Haslip also commits her time as a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Chicago Food Depository, serving as their Chairman for the Missions and Programs Committee and also serving as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Haslip has also been recognized for her commitment to prevent youth violence as part of the White House Champions of Change and National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention; and
 
WHEREAS, her primary pursuit, the Little Black Pearl Workshop, has now enhanced its educational offerings as an approved Accelerated High School under a Chicago Public Schools contract, now serving up to 200 students at the Little Black Pearl Art and Design Academy; THEREFORE
 
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the Chicago City
 
 
Council assemble this 30th day of July 2014, do hereby congratulate Ms. Monica Haslip on 20 years of service to Chicago communities as Founder and Executive Director of the Little Black Pearl Workshop; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Ms. Monica Haslip.
