RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Jazz Showcase is the oldest historic jazz club in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1947, and celebrates its 70th Anniversary this year; and

WHEREAS, The Jazz Showcase was founded by Joe Segal, and is now owned and operated by his son, Wayne Segal; and

WHEREAS, Visitors to the Jazz Showcase are greeted at the entrance by Joe Segal, who turns 91 on April 24th, and he continues to charm and welcome guests with a warm greeting; and

WHEREAS, Joe Segal grew up in Philadelphia. After high school, Mr. Segal was drafted into the Air Force and, while stationed in Champaign, Illinois, he frequently traveled Chicago to catch live jazz on Randolph Street; and

WHEREAS, Joe Segal relocated to Chicago to attend Roosevelt University on the G.I. Bill. At Roosevelt, he joined the university's jazz club in 1947 and soon began running a popular afternoon live jazz show featuring big band musicians and other artists including Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, and Lester Young; and

WHEREAS, Starting in 1957, Joe Segal ran his showcase in over sixty-three different locations. By the 1970's, he had formally opened the Jazz Showcase on Rush Street, and it currently operates from inside the Landmark Dearborn Station; and

WHEREAS, The greatest names in jazz have played at the Jazz Showcase, including Roy Hargrove, Chris Potter, Frank Morgan, Danilo Perez, Larry Coryell, Paul Wertico, James Carter, Stu Katz, Ira Sullivan, Winard Harper, McCoy Tyner, Dexter Gordon, Bunky Green, Count Basie, Kenny Burrell, Milt Jackson, Jimmy Smith, Randy Weston, Barry Harris, Joey DeFrancesco, Jack McDuff, Bill Evans, Walter Bishop Jr., Sun Ra, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Sonny Stitt, Yusef Lateef, Eddie Jefferson, Richie Cole, Joe Lovano, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Griffin, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Howard McGee, George Benson, Pat Martino, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Philly Joe Jones, Charles McPherson, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Ernestine Anderson, Lou Donaldson, Hank Crawford, Jimmy McGriff, Lonny Liston Smith, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Muhal Richard Abrahms, Zoot Sims/Al Cohn, Joe Williams, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Joe Farrell, Art Farmer, Bobby Hutcherson, the Capp/Pierce Juggernaut, Freddie Hubbard, and others; and

WHEREAS, In 2013, Joe Segal was awarded an honorary doctorate from Roosevelt University, and in 2015 he received the Nation's highest jazz honor, a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship; and

WHEREAS, The Jazz Showcase is part of the rich history of the City of Chicago, and is an essential part of what makes the City a truly unique and special place; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this nineteenth day of April, 2017, extend our heartiest congratulations to

 

 

the Jazz Showcase on its 70l Anniversary and wish the Jazz Showcase many years of continued success.
