RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING SISTER PATRICIA FILLENWARTH
WHEREAS, Sister Patricia Fillenwarth, lovingly known as Sister Patty, dedicated member of the Block Club Federation and instrumental citizen of the City of Chicago, has served the Humboldt Park Community for over 42 years at Maternity BVM Church; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been notified of Sister Patty's accomplishments by the Honorable Roberto Maldonado, Alderman of the 26th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1940 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sister Patricia Fillenwarth joyfully entered the Congregation on January 6, 1958. Since 1976, she has lived in the Chicago area at Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent; and
WHEREAS, Sister Patty has served in Indiana, Washington D.C. and Peru. She worked at many schools as a beloved teacher before becoming the principal of Maternity BVM in 1978. After years of seeing her community lack affordable counseling services, she returned to school to get a degree in Family Sendees. She has served over 400 people each year since, and, with assistance from Providence Family Sendees, also offers homework help to children and adult classes such as English and Computer 101; and
WHEREAS, Her community involvement throughout the years has been greatly influential. In 1989 she joined the Block Club Federation when there was a need for a library in the Humboldt Park community'. She not only played a vital role in bringing the library to the community but also led efforts to create a park cahed 514 Park near Maternity BVM; and
WHEREAS, Sister Patty takes pride in taking care of the parks in her neighborhood. She leads the maintenance of 514 Park and recruits volunteers to help clean the 514 Park and Humboldt Park every Earth Day; and
WHEREAS, Sister Patty's commitment to her community and her drive to help others is not only inspirational but also greatly desenting of recognition. She is an asset to Maternity BVM and a true leader in the City of Chicago; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby recognize, commemorate and celebrate the dedication and incredible altruism Sister Patricia Fillenwarth has demonstrated to Maternity BVM and the Block Club Federation.
