Honorary Resolution for Winifred Pawliger Gailen

 

Whereas, Winifred "Winnie" Pawliger Gailen was born on May 25, 1920; and

 

Whereas, Winnie has lived in Chicago for more than 93 years and lived in Lincoln Park for 39 years; and

 

Whereas, it was love at first sight when she met her husband, Lawrence Gailen, and they were married for almost 60 years before he passed away; and

 

Whereas, throughout her life, Winnie's family was her priority and she loves being a mother to Robert and Judy Gailen; and

 

Whereas, Winnie is a very talented artist and when she volunteered with the American Women's Voluntary Services during World War II, she drew servicemen's portraits and mailed the portraits to their homes; and

 

Whereas, Winnie graduated from Sullivan High School and then attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and later at age 53, she went back to school at the American Academy of Fine Art; and

 

Whereas, at the American Academy of Fine Art, Winnie learned the art of painting and drawing and developed her love for portraiture; and

 

Whereas, Winnie taught art classes at Palette and Chisel in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood; and

 

Whereas, Winnie was honored when she was asked by American Artist magazine to write an article entitled "Working from the Model in Pastel," which was published in September 1994; and

 

Whereas, Winnie donated artwork to many organizations, including The Lincoln Park Nature Conservancy, Children's Memorial Hospital and Holy Covenant Methodist Church; and

 

Whereas, Winnie received numerous awards for her work as an artist, such as Pastel
Society of America 6
th Annual International Juried Exhibition for Landscape;
Distinguished Leadership in Pastel, Kansas Pastel Society; Senior Artists Network
Member Show, 2000; Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club of New York; Palette &
Chisel; Academy of Fine Arts (member since 1987); Chicago Pastel Painters "Best of
Show" 2010; Chicago Windy City Artists—Vision 2000; and

Whereas, Winnie celebrated her 95th birthday in the year 2015; and

 

Whereas, The Honorable Michele Smith, the Alderman of the 43rd Ward wishes to apprise this august body of Winnie Gailen's significant contributions to the arts and community throughout her life; now, therefore

 

Be it resolved that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council gathered together this 17th Day of June. 2015 AD, do hereby salute Winnie Gailen, and express our heartfelt best wishes for her continued happiness and success.
