City Council - July 26, 2017 Joint Committee: Economic, Capital and Technology Development; Finance
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Technological advancements affect the way Chicago citizens live, work, and interact with local government; and
WHEREAS, Properly leveraging data and new technology makes government more efficient, effective, and open; and
WHEREAS, Cities across the country have benefited from using data and technology to increase transparency; and
WHEREAS, Chicago must reinvent the way it delivers city services, manages daily operations and community engagement; and
WHEREAS, Working with civic technology innovators to develop creative solutions to city challenges will have positive impacts; and
WHEREAS, Improving digital and information technologies can reduce the cost of sharing information; and
WHEREAS, As an example of open government, updated, real-time open data programs with an array of raw data, charts, graphs, story maps, infographics, and interactive dashboards about the City's financials could be made available to the public; and
WHEREAS, As an example of open government, updated, real-time data for the TIF District Programming could be made available to the public; and
WHEREAS, In 2015, the City published an updated Technology Plan, demonstrating its commitment to using innovative technology to strengthen communities, infrastructure, and economic growth; and
WHEREAS, Chicago seeks to establish itself as a national and global center of technological innovation; and
WHEREAS, Chicago strives to ensure the full participation of its residents and businesses in the digital economy through training and engagement programs that make technology relevant, useful, and productive; and
WHERAS, Chicago desires to encourage the vibrancy of its technology sector by attracting and retaining professionals and supporting the creation and expansion of technology companies; and
WHEREAS, The Department of Innovation & Technology is tasked with assessing the City's data and technology requirements, advising and training City departments on the effective use of data and information technology, operating the City's technology infrastructure for the efficient maintenance of municipal records, and entering into agreements with other government entities regarding shared use of communications and other data transmission infrastructure; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 26th day of July 2017, do hereby call upon the Department of Innovation and Technology to present a status update and timeline for the 2015
