RESOLUTION HONORING THE RETIREMENT OF KAREN V. SAFFOLD, Ed.D.
WHEREAS, Dr. Karen V. Saffold is the epitome of dedication within the field of education and has been the Chief of Schools for Network 13 in Chicago Public Schools,
WHEREAS, this august body has been informed of her retirement by the Honorable Stephanie D. Coleman, A lderman of the 16th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Saffold has always been driven by the belief that all should serve as positive role models for our youth and continually strive to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully compete in the global market; and
WHEREAS, as a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she has worked as the Scholarship Chair, mentored teenage girls through the Teen Esteem program, provided attire to high school girls going to prom through the Glass Slipper Project and given instructional support and tutoring services for at risk students through the Afterschool Matters;
WHEREAS, she has provided professional development and instructional support to an abundance of school principals, assistant principals, leadership teams and teachers within Chicagoland and vicinity; and
WHEREAS, she worked closely with .Local School Councils to recruit and hire the best principals for their respective communities and also assisted schools with the development and implementation of effective school improvement plans and created partnerships with various universities and state officials; and
WHEREAS, prior to her position of Chief of Schools, she served as principal, assistant principal, curriculum coordinator, head teacher and classroom teacher for The Archdioceses of Chicago and Chicago Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, she has nientored many administrators, students and teachers and her performance and data have led students in her district to have ranked in the top quartile. She is dedicated to the field of education and passionate about making a difference in the lives of all children; and
WHEREAS, she has earned degrees and certificates from Illinois State, Roosevelt, Nova Southeastern, Harvard and Northwestern Universities and has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions; and
WHEREAS, she is happily married to her high school sweetheart, Wendell, the proud mother of 2 children, 1 grandson, and a faithful member of Covenant United Church of Christ;
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered this 17th day of June, 2020, do hereby express our Congratulations to Dr. Saffold on her retirement;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be presented to Dr. Karen V. Saffold as a sign of our honor, gratitude and respect;
