Ladies and Gentlemen:
1 transmit herewith, together with Aldermen King, Ervin, Scott, Waguespack, Sposato, Rodriguez-Sanchez, Moore. Ramirez-Rosa, Lee, Mitts, Tunney, O'Shea, Villegas, Cappleman, Lopez, Hadden, Sadlowski-Garza, Rodriguez and Sigcho-Lopez, a resolution celebrating Native American Heritage Month.
Your favorable consideration ofthis resolution will be appreciated.

RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the United States observes National Native American Heritage Month every year during the month of November in recognition of the essential and unique contributions of Native peoples past and present; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, the United States Congress adopted a joint resolution authorizing and requesting the President of the United States to proclaim November as "National American Indian Heritage Month"; and
WHEREAS, today, National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide, honoring the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Native peoples; and
WHEREAS, 280,985 Illinois residents identified as American Indian or Alaska Native in ' the 2020 United States Census; and
WHEREAS, Chicago has the third largest urban Native American population in the United States, and the largest Native American population in the Midwest, with over 150 tribal nations represented in the metropolitan area; and
\ WHEREAS, Chicago is home to the American Indian Center, the nation's oldest urban Native American community and social services center, as well as numerous professional, educational, and cultural organizations; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago acknowledges that Chicago is located on the traditional homelands of the Anishinaabe, or the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations; and
WHEREAS, the City acknowledges that many other Nations consider this area their traditional homeland, including the Myaamia, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Kickapoo, and Mascouten; and
WHEREAS, the City recognizes the contributions of Kitihawa ofthe Potawatomi Nation for her role in fostering the community that has become Chicago; and
WHEREAS, the City is committed to promoting Native cultural heritage, and, in 2021, the City Council adopted a formal land acknowledgment resolution; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this fourth day of November, 2022, do hereby designate November 2022 as Native American Heritage Month in the City of Chicago, and reaffirm our acknowledgement that the City of Chicago is located on land that is the traditional homeland of many Native peoples and that the Native American community remains a partner in Chicago's present and future.
