WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this Chamber learned of the death of William "Ted" L. Chapman on November 16, 2016 at the age of 100; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Emma Mitts, Alderman of the 37th Ward; and
WHEREAS, William was born to the late Bill Allen and Lottie Mae Chapman on November 6, 1916, in Marion, Louisiana. I lis parents passed away at an early age, and William was raised by his maternal grandmother, Gertrude Wills; and
WHEREAS, William diligently served his country, enlisting in the Armed Forces in December 1944 and fighting in WWII. He was honorably discharged in November 1945; and
WHEREAS, William married the love of his life, the late Ernestine Lott, on January 26, 1946, and the couple focused on building a life together through family and love. He always prepared Sunday dinners for his family, where he enjoyed discussing politics and spending time with his loved ones; and
WHEREAS, William loved to repair things, andispent decades working for Hotpoint, now known as General Electric as a Die Setter. He retired from the company and began a second career as a Postal Worker, and eventually retired at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, William accepted Christ as his lord anti savior, and regularly attended church with his family; and \
WHEREAS, William was affectionately known by everyone in the neighborhood as "Granddad." He was an active member of the North Austin community who'served as a Precinct Captain and Block Club President; and
WHEREAS, William leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Camille Gant, Janice Moore (Fred), Carolyn Matthews (Ronald) and Corliss Chapman-King; sister in-law, Edna Lott; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ernestine; son Kenneth, son-in-law, Willie; and parents, Bill and Lottie; and
WHEREAS, William touched the lives of all who knew him through his lively spirit, kind heart, and support of his community. He will be deeply missed, but memories of him will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this fourteenth day of December, 2016, do hereby extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of William "Ted" L. Chapman.
