RESOLUTION HONORING DR. HIRAM BROYLS

 

 

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that the members of the Chicago City Council are hereby informed of the honorary street naming for Dr. Hiram Broyls; and

WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been notified of Dr. Broyls' well-deserved honor by Alderman Chris Taliaferro of the 29th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Hiram Broyls attended Shoop Elementary School in Chicago and graduated in six years by skipping two grades; and

WHEREAS, he graduated from Morgan Park High School; and

WHEREAS, Hiram Broyles continued his education at City Colleges, Roosevelt University, Chicago Teachers College (Governors State University), earning his Doctorate in Education Administration from Union Graduate School; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Broyles began his career as a teacher at Hendricks Elementary School at 43rd and Princeton where he taught for several years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Broyles then went to Lewis-Champlin School at 62nd and Englewood where he taught for 17 years;

WHEREAS, he then was named to his first principal job at Dulles School at 63rd and King Drive; and

WHEREAS, in September 1977 Dr. Broyles was transferred to Luther Burbank Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Broyles has been principal there for a remarkable 38 years, and worked in the Chicago Public Schools for 59 years; and

WHEREAS, Burbank School has thrived under his leadership and dedicated work with amazing students, talented faculty, and committed parents; and

WHEREAS, not only did Dr. Broyles save the school from potential closure in 1978, but he was instrumental in the effort leading to the construction of a new facility in the 1990s; and

WHEREAS, Hiram Broyls served with distinction for 4 years in the Illinois National Guard and 2 years in the Army; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Broyls has a wife, a son, a daughter and four grandchildren, and he still lives in the house in which he was born; and

WHEREAS, naming a street in Dr. Broyls honor is a fitting tribute; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this thirteenth day of January, 2016, do hereby express our gratitude to Dr. Hiram Broyles and express our heartfelt wish for his continued success; and
