BTBOIS • Just after 6:00 P m- on tne late winter day of March 13, 2013, Officers Jolanta M. Daisy (Star #10982) and Lawrence F. Hill (Star #16047) of the Chicago Police Department were on routine patrol when they received a call reporting a serious house fire in the Gresham community; and

WHEREAS, The officers rushed to the 7600 block of South Eggleston Avenue, where they encountered a single-family home with heavy clouds of smoke billowing from its windows; and

WHEREAS, Despite lacking portable oxygen and other safety equipment necessary to enter a burning building, Officers Daisy and Hill did not hesitate for a moment, choosing instead to put their own lives at risk by proceeding directly into the house on the mere possibility that one or more persons might be trapped inside; and

WHEREAS, Upon entering the home, Officers Daisy and Hill fought their way through the fumes, heat and smoke; and

WHEREAS, The officers soon discovered two elderly residents, aged 84 and 86, sitting on a sofa, both seriously disoriented and incapable of making their own escape from the fire raging around them; and

WHEREAS, Officers Daisy and Hill lost no time in escorting one victim out of the building and carrying the other, who was unable to walk on her own, down the porch steps and away from the swiftly intensifying fire; and

WHEREAS, Having ensured that these victims were safe outside, the officers immediately turned to face the danger again, rushing back into the house to conduct a sweep of the lower floor; and

WHEREAS, Officers Daisy and Hill made their way through the now virtually overwhelming fire and smoke, and discovered another resident asleep in a bedroom, who they quickly roused and evacuated through the conflagration to safety; and

WHEREAS, Thanks to their quick thinking, fortitude, and, above all, remarkable courage, these officers saved three civilians from near-certain death, and in the process lived up to the demanding standards and expectations that come with the privilege of wearing a Chicago Police Department badge; and

WHEREAS, The exemplary conduct and selflessness of officers like Jolanta Davis and Lawrence Hill are emblematic of the highest traditions of the Chicago Police Department; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-sixth day of June, 2013, do hereby honor Police Officers Jolanta M. Daisy and Lawrence F. Hill for their heroism, and express our sincere gratitude to these distinguished public servants, who, like so many before them, risked life and limb in fulfillment of their sworn oath to serve and protect the people of Chicago; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Officers Daisy and Hill, and placed on permanent record in their personnel files, as a token of our gratitude and esteem.
