TRIBUTE TO THE LATE THELMA YVETTE BURNS
WHEREAS, God in His Infinite Wisdom and Judgement has called to her eternal reward, Thelma Burns, beloved citizen and friend, Wednesday, April 23, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Michelle A. Harris, Alderman of the 8th Ward and Chairman of the Committee on Committees, Rules and Ethics; and
WHEREAS, On May 2, 1928 in Flint, Michigan, Our Lord blessed Bertha Smith and Roy Lee Morgan with the birth of their precious child, Thelma Yvette. She moved to Illinois and chose Chicago to be her place of residence. Thelma was educated through the Chicago Public School system, attending Burke Elementary School and DuSable High School; and
WHEREAS, Thelma matured into a young woman who captured the heart of the man who was to become her husband, Kermit Earl Townson, Sr. This loving couple were united in marriage in 1946 and became the loving and devoted parents of six children. Thelma later married Elias Burns who preceded her in death; and
WHEREAS, Thelma Yvette Burns, a loving mother, daughter, grandmother, great grandmother and friend will be fondly remembered by all whose lives were enriched because of the kindness and thoughtfulness she extended to her fellowman; and
WHEREAS, Thelma Yvette Burns will be dearly missed by the many family members who shared her friendship and sought her advice, wisdom and consolation; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Thelma Yvette Burns imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; and
WHEREAS, Having her parents and a brother precede her in death, she is survived by her children, Theresa, Kermit Jr., Diane, Linda, Judith and Darryl (Andrea); her grandchildren and great grandchildren; her sisters and brother, Shirley, Ronnie, Mae Frances and Denise Kelly; James Davis, Jr. and a host of friends and neighbors; now, therefore.
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled here this eighth day of October 2014 A.D., do hereby commemorate Thelma Yvette Burns for her grace-filled life and do hereby join her loved ones in celebrating the life of this wonderful woman and outstanding citizen.
