WHEREAS, On Sunday, February 8, 2015, the Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom called Juneter Mayes to her eternal journey; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Lona Lane, Alderman of the 18th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Juneter was born on July 10, 1931 in McCormick, South Carolina; she was born to the union of Lillie and Dacus Searles; and
WHEREAS, Juneter accepted Christ at an early age and was taught the true meaning of being a Christian at the Springfield AME in McCormick, South Carolina where her parents served as trustees of the church; and
WHEREAS, she attended Mims High School in McCormick, South Carolina, after graduation she moved to Evanston, Illinois where she later met and married Johnny Mayes in 1950. To this loving union five children were born. After moving to Evanston, Illinois, Juneter joined the Ebenezer AME Church in Evanston, Illinois until she joined ST. Peter's COGIC in Chicago, Illinois under the leadership of her husband. She served as first lady and served on the mother's board. Juneter worked tirelessly being a servant of the Lord lending support wherever needed. As a first lady she worked and supported the Minister's Circle and the first ladies of the Minister's Circle. Later, she joined the Christ Temple M.B. Church; and
WHEREAS, Juneter worked many jobs but those memorable were at Steward-Warner for twenty years of service until their closure. She also worked various other companies such a Campbell Soup and Sam's Club. Juneter was a wonderful person making sure everyone had what they needed. She would always encourage you with her favorite scripture Psalms: 121 "Look to the hills whence cometh my help, my help cometh from the Lord"; and
WHEREAS, Juneter was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elder Johnny Mayes; son, Johnny Mayes Jr.; parents, Dacus and Lillie Searles; one sister Odessa Ball; and leaves behind, to cherish her precious memories, her children, Linda Sims, Alfred (Margie) Mayes, Deborah Thaxton and Denise Mayes; one sister Virtee Davis; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one goddaughter, Tamicka Juneter Simmons, and a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, cousins and several devoted friends whom she loved dearly; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here in assembly this eighteenth day of March 2015 A.D., do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of Juneter Mayes and extend to her family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared, and presented to
