I transmit herewith a resolution regarding the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Your favorable consideration of this resolution will be appreciated.

RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Twelve years ago today, on September 11, 2001, our Nation sustained a series of terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania that resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent men, women, and children; and
WHEREAS, Firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, physicians, nurses, military personnel, and other public servants from all over the United States responded to the tragedy immediately and without concern for their own safety, saving countless lives; and
WHEREAS, Our city was well represented in these efforts, with Chicago Police officers assisting the New York Police Department by searching the buildings surrounding the fallen World Trade Center for victims, and providing perimeter security and supplemental patrols in Times Square, as well as security at St. Patrick's Cathedral during memorials to the fallen; and
WHEREAS, Dozens of Chicago firefighters also quickly traveled to New York City to assist in rescue and recovery efforts; and
WHEREAS, In the aftermath ofthe attacks, good people the world over contributed time and resources to the cause, and rallied together to condemn the evil of terrorism; and
WHEREAS, In the years following 9-11, our federal government, in cooperation with its international allies, undertook a relentless search for those behind the attacks, a mission that culminated in the May 2, 2011, death of their leader, Osama Bin Laden, at the hands of an elite team of Navy SEALs; and
WHEREAS, Although the defeat of Bin Laden represents an important victory in the struggle, terrorism remains a profound threat to our Nation and the entire world; and
WHEREAS, Hundreds of thousands of brave men and women continue to serve every day, answering the call to duty as members of the armed forces, with thousands having given their lives or been injured defending our security and preventing future terrorist attacks; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, assembled this eleventh day of September, 2013, do hereby encourage all Chicagoans to observe a moment of silence every September 11th in honor and remembrance of the persons killed and injured in the attacks on this date in 2001; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we also urge the people of Chicago to look to the future with hope and resolve, sustaining the solidarity forged in the fire of 9/11, and fostering the spirit of public mindedness and volunteerism that makes our Nation not only strong, but great.
