CONGRATULATING THE ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA PARISH ON ITS 110T" YEAR OF DEVOTED SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE
 
 
WHEREAS, 110 years ago, the Archbishop of Chicago, the Most Reverend James Edward Quigley, asked Father Orazio D'Andrea to develop a new parish for Italian immigrants in the area then known as Kensington; and
 
WHEREAS, The nascent parish was named for St. Anthony of Padua, a Portuguese immigrant to Italy whose was so beloved by the Italians that he was canonized only a year after his passing. The first church was a storefront on East Kensington. Eventually, a more appropriate edifice was built on the comer of Prairie and Kensington that served the community until the present church was built in 1961 just west of the previous one; and
 
WHEREAS, Although the ethnicity of the parishioners have changed with the demographics of the area, it has remained a "personal parish " for the many families who found St. Anthony's a home in the past. Its ministries have now come to serve the greater community of the Roseland/Pullman neighborhoods; and
 
WHEREAS, To celebrate this historic occasion, the St. Anthony of Padua parishioners will hold their Annual Alumni Dinner Dance for the parish school's graduates on Columbus Day, October 12, 2013. This event will raise needed funds to expand and build on a strong ministry that seeks to bring teaching, healing, and reconciliation to a part of this city in sore need of it; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of the celebration of St. Anthony of Padua's historic milestone and significant mission; now therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled here this 11th Day of September, 2013 AD, do hereby congratulate the priests and parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua on their 110th Anniversary and applaud the noteworthy spiritual and civic contribution they make to their community and the citizens of this city.
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Reverend Father Mark J. Krylowicz, Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
