MEMORIAL

RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, God in His infinite wisdom and judgment has called his precious child, Marie Westbrook Smith home to her eternal reward, July 8, 2017; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been notified of her transition by the Honorable Michelle A. Harris, Alderman of the 8th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Born March 22, in Carthage, Arkansas to the union of Dock Westbrook and Vetta Brandon. Marie's childhood years were spent with her grandmother, Val Marie Brandon. In 1950 she relocated to live with her mother and received her education through the Detroit school system; and

 

WHEREAS, In the 1960's Marie moved to Chicago and was gainfully employed at various locations in the cosmetology and medical fields. She met the love of her life, Edward Ray Smith and on July 8, 1964 they were united in marriage. They became the proud parents of two loving sons, Keith and Kraig. Marie continued her education and received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Illinois, Navy Pier. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and

 

WHEREAS, In the 1990's Marie Westbrook Smith, a wonderful and dedicated teacher, retired from Henderson Elementary School. She was very active in cornmunity organizations, always giving 100% of her time and energy in an effort to maintain stability and sociability in her grateful community. She was a member of: United Methodist Women; Gospel Choir; Partners in Retirement; St. Mark Book Table; St. Mark Reading Group; Vacation Bible School; The Divas; The Book Club; and the Secretary of the 8800 S. Cornell Block Club; and

 

WHEREAS, Throughout her fruitful life, Marie Westbrook Smith earned the respect and friendship of many. This highly regarded citizen has reached out and touched many, in countless ways. Her strong guidance, gentle kindness and endless generosity will serve as an inspiration and comfort to all who knew and loved her; and

 

WHEREAS, Marie Westbrook Smith leaves to celebrate her accomplishments and cherish her memory her husband, Edward R. Smith; sons, Keith Smith and Kraig Smith (Lisa); grandchildren, Brianna Smith and Keith Smith, Jr., and their mother, Tonya Davidson; cousins, Phillip and Mary Moore; siblings, Venus Westbrook, Randy Westbrook; stepchildren, Cynthia Macklin (Clarence), Edward Ray Smith, Jr., Gwendolyn Bean, Anthony Birt, and Debra Cornelius; a host of other relatives; longtime Detroit friends, and other friends and neighbors. Her mother, Vetta Brandon, father, Dock Westbrook, grandmother, Val Marie Brandon, aunt doll, Virginia Moore, uncle, Sam Brandon and stepmother, Ida Westbrook preceded her in death; now, therefore,

 

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled here this sixth day of September, 2017 A.D., do hereby commemorate Marie Westbrook Smith, for her character, intelligence and compassion which will continue to shine in the lives of those who knew and loved her and do hereby extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends.
