Commemorating the 100 Anniversary of Beta Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Incorporated
WHEREAS, Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered October, 1913 in Chicago, Illinois and is celebrating 100 years of existence and service;
WHEREAS, Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was the second chapter organized and the first chapter established under the provisions of Sub-chapter Three of Chapter XVII of the Code of Laws of the District of Columbia in the second largest city in the United States;
WHEREAS, Beta Chapter was the hostess chapter to the 2nd Boule of Alpha Kappa Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated held December 1919 at the War Camp Community Center in Chicago, IL;
WHEREAS, Lorraine Richardson Green, President of Beta Chapter was elected and served as the second Supreme President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and that during her administration the
sorority's Founders 'Day Celebration was initiated, sorority pin adopted, and first issue of the Ivy Leaf magazine published;
WHEREAS, Beta Chapter through the years has earned many awards for service and scholastic achievement and
many academic firsts including the first Black woman awarded a master s degree in Sociology at the University
of Chicago, first Black woman awarded the Gertrude Seltz Scholarship for the highest grade point average among first-year women, and the first Black woman to receive a doctoral degree in Philosophy from the University of Chicago, the
first recipient of Alpha Kappa Alpha's Foreign Travel Grant from Central Region and the recipient of Central Region s
First Undergraduate Achievement Cup awarded by the region;
WHEREAS, 100 years of service to mankind has witnessed Beta Chapter's involvement in the Chicagoland
Community and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority s National Programs from the National Guidance Program in
1924. To Global Leadership Through Timeless Service and Beta Chapter members have gone forth to serve the sorority as Chapter, Regional and National officers and on Regional, National/International committees;
WHEREAS, Beta Chapter is proud of the chapter s part in making the world outside remember, cherish and
appreciate the ideals for which Alpha Kappa Alpha stands and the chapter's contribution to Chicago and the International community.
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled here this 16th Day of October, 2013 AD, recognize the important and significant contributions of Beta Chapter to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and salutes Beta Chapter for their 100 years of continuous exemplary service to our sisterhood;
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the Beta Chapter and that October 10-13, 2013 be declared Beta Chapter 100th Anniversary weekend in Central Region, Chicago, Illinois and encourage all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to join Central Region on this Historic Occasion for a weekend of Reunion, Rejoicing and Renewal.
