SALUTE TO SPC RICHARD NAVARRO
 
 
WHEREAS, United States Army Reserve SPC Richard Navarro, a valorus soldier, a respected English instructor at John F. Kennedy High School on this city's Southwest Side and outstanding citizen of his community, completed a year-long tour-of duty in Iraq on January 5, 2011; and
 
WHEREAS, SPC Richard Navarro enlisted in the Reserve in January 2008 thus fulfilling a promise made on the morning of September 11, 2001. At that time, he was a swimming instructor in suburban Libertyville High School. After he finished his last class that day, he went directly to his local recruiting station but was told to finish the degree he was working on first which would make his service to the nation more valuable; and
 
WHEREAS, After completing his Basic Combat Training, SPC Richard Navarro took his Advanced Individual Training in Gulfport, Mississippi and shortly thereafter he received notice of activation for deployment. When he finished a month-long training session at Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin his Engineering Battalion was mobilized out of Ft. Bliss, Texas and Camp McGregor, New Mexico and shipped off to Talill, Iraq; and
 
WHEREAS, SPC Richard Navarro and his unit endured the broad spectrum of weather that ranged from freezing to 140 degrees. Several months of rain turned the terrain into ankle-deep mud where the roads would sink under the weight of their military vehicles. The night would bring on constant incoming rocket and mortar fire. His company was bombarded five times but managed to escape any fatalities; and
 
WHEREAS, His three year experience in the military has left Richard Navarro with a greater appreciation for things most civilians take for granted such as plumbing, electricity, clean air and running water as well as left him a more organized and physically fit person. Although he was raised in Libertyville, he has, for the past five years, resided in this city. His parents, Richard and Vija Navarro, and two sisters Mandy and Mamie are justifiably proud of him; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael R. Zalewski, Alderman of the 23rd Ward, has apprised this august body of this valiant hero's return; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and the members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 13th day of April 2011, do hereby salute Richard Navarro for his courageous service to this city and the nation and extend our very best wishes for continued success in every future mission he intends to undertake.
