Title: Congratulations extended to Wellington-Oakdale Old Glory March Society on 50th anniversary

RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, the "Pint-sized Patriots" of the Wellington-Oakdale Old Glory March Society (WOOGMS), will celebrate its' fiftieth year of marching through the streets of the Lakeview Community this Memorial Day and Labor Day; and,
 
WHEREAS, Alderman Tunney has been notified of this historic landmark; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Annual WOOGMS Memorial Day Parade celebrates 50 years of small town patriotism in the heart ofthe city; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Parade steps off from Pine Grove & Wellington on Monday, May 27lh at 11am just as it has done for the past fifty years; and,
 
WHEREAS, the motto ofthe parade "Everybody Marches; Nobody Watches", travels through the beautiful Lakeview community, concluding seven blocks later on the front lawn of St. Joseph's Hospital; and,
 
WHEREAS, founded in 1963 by Al Weisman, the WOOGMS parade started with a flag and a few neighborhood kids marching around the block and has grown to well over 1,000 participants; and,
 
WHEREAS, after Al's death in 1963, his son Tony assumed the duties of Parade Marshal and has been leading WOOGMS parade the same contagious enthusiasm ever since, assisted by his two sons, Adam and Michael, as the third generation of WOOGMS Parade Marshals; and,
 
WHEREAS, in honor of the parade's 50th anniversary, filmmakers Alan Spencer and Jerry Aronson will be updating their short documentary of the parade, originally shot in 1973, with new footage ofthe now-adult original marchers and their families; and,
 
WHEREAS, Parade organizers expect hundreds of original marchers to attend with their children and grandchildren to honor the parade that allows the participants to have fun, while learning about patriotism and community involvement; now therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the Chicago City Council assembled this 8th day in May, 2013 do hereby congratulate the organizers ofthe Wellington-Oakdale Old Glory March Society (WOOGMS) on their fiftieth anniversary and wish them continued success in the next fifty years of celebrating patriotism and community spirit; and,
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Weisman family.
