SALUTE TO THE HISTORIC PULLMAN FOUNDATION
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation was established in 1973 with the mission to preserve and promote the Pullman Historic District as a historic site as well as a residential community; and
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation has, for four decades, provided educational tours for teachers and students in elementary and secondary schools along with colleges and universities and professional associations, interpreting how the 19th century industrial revolution in railroad passenger and freight service, the labor movement, and the impact of architecture and urban design principles are applicable to today and the future; and
WHEREAS, This eleemosynary institution has served thejPullman Historic District, its visitors and its residents by operating the Historic Pullman Center for forty consecutive years as well as the Hotel Florence for twenty-five years and the Historic Pullman Visitor Center for twenty years; and I
WHEREAS, For forty years the Historic Pullman Foundation has welcomed visitors to the Pullman Historic District from across the nation and around the world. It has produced educational exhibits, publications, video programs, lectures, studies, and assisted educators and writers on subjects relating to Pullman and the preservation of the cultural resources of the Pullman Historic District; and i
WHEREAS, In 1994, the Historic Pullman Foundation hosted a grand celebration of the Labor Day Centennial and the commemoration of the Pullman Strike of 1894, coordinating programs and events with the participation of thousands of people representing labor, government, industry and the citizens of Chicago and Illinois; and
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation collects, displays and preserves historic objects and documents pertaining to the district and its past for viewing by the public; and
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation, together with the Pullman Civic Organization, have sponsored forty Annual Historic Pullman House Tours, attracting thousands of tourists to the Pullman Historic District and raising funds used for the continuing restoration of Pullman's historic buildings; and
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation and the Pullman Civic Organization lead the effort to save the Pullman Factory Clock Tower following the fire of December 1, 1998, resulting in the Pullman Factory Task Force Report and the $ 10,000,000 reconstruction of the Clock Tower Building, and
 
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation continues its efforts to make the public aware of Pullman's Historical significance as a cultural resource of the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation along with the City of Chicago, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, National Park Conservation Association, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, Pullman Civic Organization, A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, Bronzeville Historical Society, and Pullman Arts are pursuing the establishment of the Pullman National Historical Park as Chicago's first National Park and the second National Park of Illinois and adding to Chicago's remarkable and noteworthy international destination sites for our tourism industry; and
WHEREAS, The Historic Pullman Foundation is committed to assisting the U.S. National Park Service in its mission at the Pullman National Landmark District and potential National Historical Park, now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 5th Day of February, 2014 AD, do hereby salute the forty years of dedicated service by the Historic Pullman Foundation toward the preservation and interpretation of the Pullman National Landmark District as a significant national and international cultural resource of the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois and the United States of America.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be prepared and presented to the Historic Pullman Foundation, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Board, the U.S. National Park Service, the U.S. Department of Interior, the Illinois Congressional delegation, and The Honorable Barack H.
