RESOLUTION HONORING THE PRINCE HALL GRAND LODGE OF ILLINOIS

WHEREAS, Freemasonry among African American men was forged with the initiation of Prince Flail and 14 other African American men in Boston, Massachusetts on March 6, 1775 by members affiliated with Irish Military Lodge No. 441; and

WHEREAS, Prince Hall Affiliated Freemasonry among African American men has been in existence within the State of Illinois since 1851, initiating prominent citizens and abolitionists, and with the warrant of North Star Lodge in the City of Chicago in 1852, in the City of Alton with the warrant of Griffin T. Watson Lodge in 1856, and the City of Springfield with the warrant of Central Lodge in 1857; and

WHEREAS, the three Lodges formed within the State of Illinois, namely, North Star Lodge of Chicago, G.T. Watson Lodge of Alton and Central Lodge of Springfield, forged the bonds of fraternal ties and collaborated to form the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois in the year 1867; and

WHEREAS, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois, the oldest active African American Fraternal organization in the state, is under the leadership of Most Worshipful Brother Millard V. Driskell, 44^th Grand Master of Illinois Prince Hall Masons and continues to contribute to society through charitable works by developing men into responsible citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois will convene for its 148^th Annual Communication together with its Concordant Bodies at the annual Unification Session for the year 2014 in the city of Springfield, Illinois under the leadership and direction of Most Worshipful Brother Millard V. Driskell, Grand Master of Illinois Prince Hall Masons; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the Chicago City Council assemble this 30^th day of July 2014, do hereby proclaim July 25^th through July
