HONORARY STREET SIGN FOR DONALD L SEALS SR PR ORDINANCE

 

 

WHEREAS, Donald L. Seals Sr. was born to Walter & Goldie E. Gassett-Seals on January 1, 1927 in Chicago, IL. He was the second of five children; and

 

WHEREAS, Donald Sr. was a proud alumnus of Chicago Public Schools, graduating Edmund Burke Elementary School (1941) and Hyde Park High School (1945) where he played trumpet in the school orchestra. After graduation, Donald was enlisted into the United States Air Force as a trumpet and fugal horn player in the Air Force Band and later engineer driver; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Seals quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to Captain, Assistant Chief, and ultimately Fire Chief. Chief Seals earned many superior declarations, and served as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Liaison as he trained fire fighters to become state regulated fire marshals ; and

 

WHEREAS, Donald Seals Sr. exemplified the sense of pride, cohesion, and identity in the Englewood Community for over 33 years as proprietor of the People's Choice Grocery Store located on 56th & Princeton; and

 

WHEREAS, Donald Seals Sr. was a steward for assisting the community, especially young people, advocating skills and life lesson that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. He blended his talents into lessons of kindness, providing community children with basic necessities like coats, food, homework assistance and humility; and

 

WHEREAS, after 95 extraordinary years, Heaven added an "Englewood Angel" as Donald Seals Sr. served as a guiding light that shined and brighten many of the faces of family, friends and anyone who encountered him being a true inspiration to everyone around him. He showed love, brought joy, and gave us all the lasting gift of life and will bless our memories forever, and

 

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO:

Section 1. Pursuant to Section 2-8-040 ofthe Municipal Code of Chicago, which allows erection of honorary street name designations, the Commissioner ofthe Chicago Department of Transportation shall take the necessary action for standardization of 5500 - 5659 S. Princeton as Honorary "Donald L. Seals Sr. Dr".

Section 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage and publication.
