Resolution Honoring Anna Zolkowki Sobor

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor has selflessly and with determination served the Northwest Side, the Old Irving Park community, and the 45th Ward with countless volunteer hours; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor is the daughter of Polish immigrants, raised in Humboldt Park and is now a resident of Old Irving Park and is fluent in both English and Polish; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor through her education, career, parenting and community activism, has been a model ofthe motto "Great neighborhood don't just happen"; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor has served the Old Irving Park Association over the course of more than 20 years in a variety of roles, including four terms as President and two terms as Secretary and Director; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor got involved in the Old Irving Park Association when she brought her son, Danny, to a meeting and asked about events for kids. Because of her great ideas, energy and the sparkle in her eye, she was named chair ofthe OIPA Parents Committee and later fought to create the Disney II School park and playlot; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor, as volunteer OIPA Zoning Committee co-chair, worked to rezone Old Irving Park to maintain its historic character; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor has served as a volunteer commissioner for the Six Corners Special Service Area; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor focused her education on community development, earning three degrees in a four-year period - a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Political Science. Her Bachelor's thesis researched the housing stock in Portage Park to explain how housing stock determines community character; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor helped save the Portage Theater in 2012 by organizing an effort to preserve it and landmark it; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor was one of the leaders of the coalition to advocate for a new, permanent location for the Independence Branch ofthe Chicago Public Library; and

WHEREAS, Anna Zolkowski Sobor was the 1982 Polish American Congress Polish Constitution Parade Queen and later served for many years as the parade emcee;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, assembled this 10th day of April 2019, do hereby honor the many volunteer

 

 

contributions of Anna Zolkowski Sobor to the Old Irving Park community and the City of Chicago; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Anna Zolkowski Sobor as a token of our esteem and gratitude.
