SALUTE TO THE CENTENNIAL YEAR OF THREE COLLEGES
AT DEPAUL UNIVERSITY
WHEREAS, DePaul University, the largest and most diverse Catholic institution of higher learning in the nation, celebrates the centennial years of the founding of its colleges of business, music and law; and
WHEREAS, In 1913, DePaul University opened the first business school at an American Catholic university and one of the nation's first ten business schools. A pioneer for opening and staying in the Loop—the heart of this city's business district—the recently renamed Driehaus College of Business has produced well-educated, socially responsible business professionals who are leaders worldwide; and
WHEREAS, That same year the DePaul University College of Law was established, offering this city's diverse population a quality legal education. This outstanding school of jurisprudence has produced three former mayors, state and federal judges, public servants, business professionals and attorneys in practice throughout the nation; and
WHEREAS, The DePaul School of Music began in the autumn of 1912. Many of the faculty are practicing musicians who are members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. This college counts among it alumni a former concertmaster of the CSO, a winner of a Pulitzer Prize in Composition who was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, and the members of the legendary rock group, Chicago, who met and formed the iconic band while attending the
School; and
WHEREAS, All three colleges have adhered to the mission of DePaul University to provide its culturally and ethnically diverse population with the highest quality education that is both relevant and practical; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Michele Smith, Alderman of the 43rd Ward, has apprised this august body of the significant milestones of this noteworthy institution of higher education; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 13th Day of February, 2013 AD, do hereby salute DePaul University on the occasion of the centennial year of its colleges of business, music and law and extend our felicitations and very best wishes for continuing success for centuries to come.
