RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 17-23, 2020 AS CONSTITUTION WEEK

WHEREAS, Constitution Week, a week commemorating our nation's founding cocument and to reflect on our responsibilities to protect and defend the'Constitution, will take.place September,;-17 -September, 23, 2020; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago CityvQouncil has been informed ofthis national event by the Honorable Matthew J. O'Shea, Alderman of the 19th Ward; and

WHEREAS, September 17, 2020 marks the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the. Constitution .of the United States of America; and

 

WHEREAS, The Daughters ofthe American Revolution (DAR) is a nonprofit, non-political, national women's service organization; that hosts Constitution Week to commemorate America's most important document; and

 

WHEREAS, The local Dewalt Mechlin Chapter of DAR has members from all around the City,:the surrounding suburbs, and across Illinois and neighboring states, and is responsible for over a century of service to the community by making gift bags for veterans, serving as election judges, installing commemorative markers at historic locations, collecting donations for food pantries and women's shelters, and sewing masks in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; and

WHEREAS, In 1956, the DAR successfully petitioned the United States Congress to adopt a resolution declaring September 17 - 23 as Constitution Week, which was signed into law on August 2, 1858 by President Dwight D Eisenhower; and

WHEREAS, Constitution Week emphasizes the responsibility to protect and defend the Constitution, inform people that the Constitution is the foundation for the American way of life and encourage the . study of historical events that led'to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787;: and

WHEREAS, It is in the public's interest for the residents, civic leaders, and child-en in the City of Chicago to gain knowledge and maintain an understanding ofthe Constitution; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered here this ninth day of September, 2020, do hereby recognize the week of September 17- 23, 2020 as Constitution Week, commend the Daughters ofthe American Revolution for their continued service, and encourage all residents to study the Constitution and what it means to the.country.
